SELECTED WORK

Unafraid to explore taboo topics in the reality of the human experience; from decoding the male gaze in female nudism, reappraising body neutrality, to reclaiming true female empowerment as a brown, Malay-Java, Muslim woman, Atiqah aspires to make art that empowers.

Here are a few recent works, not limited to a specific medium.

FAT CORSET

2023
Photographic Stills & Wearable Sculptures on Hanging Mannequins
Dimensions: Variable

Through the uglification and exaggeration of fat and excess skin that are usually hidden from the media, Atiqah created Fat Corsets as an act of protest, to reclaim her power and bodily autonomy.

Fat Corsets are wearable sculptures that go against the expectations of what is deemed acceptable or desirable for a woman's body to look like today.

Made of deconstructed Cotton Fibres, Expired Makeup and Skincare (things we use every day for upkeep and beautification) Atiqah had repurposed, and used instead to aid the making of the Fat Corsets. The act of creating is in turn, reconstructing its purpose, deeming it powerless in this process of art-making.

Through this work, Atiqah hopes to highlight the issues faced by people everyday, in this case, Body Dysmorphia, faced by men and women alike, due to the unrealistic expectations placed on us by society.

LOVE, ATIQAH

2023
Plaster of Paris, Stocking, Acrylic Paint
Dimensions: Variable

"This body-vessel thing

Everything: all the

Pain and shame, Fat

muscle and bone...

Everything that I am

is mine."

Excerpt from the artist's personal journal entry titled 'Love Letter to Atiqah'.

Love Atiqah was created by Atiqah with intention- to reclaim herself - imperfections, shame and all. This sculpture was created after a tedious process of self-casting her neck, chest and décolletage during a sculpture class in the NIE (National Institute of Education). The sculpture was then casted into its final form, left lightly sanded down and carved, to keep the form as raw and honest in its depiction of the body. Atiqah then wrote the words, and added nude stockings to reminisce skin and add visual interest.

METAMORPHOSIS

2023

Expired/Dried out Wet Tissue, Metal wire, Fishing line & Deconstructed Cotton Fibres

Dimensions: Variable

This hanging, kinetic sculpture installation was made from dried-out and expired wet (floor and makeup) wipes donated by friends and family.

Through this exercise, Atiqah found and tested the limitations and strength of cotton. With the help of metal wire as a scaffold, she was able to present cotton at its mo st fragile state as an organic form.

Months of exploration with different textile manipulation techniques (shredding, ripping, mixing (with ink, glue, rubbing alcohol/DIY adhesive concoctions)), enabled her to be truly sensitive to the process of deconstruction & materiality, producing a myriad of different textures and forms along the way.

FACETS

2020
Mixed Media Collage, Stop Motion Video
Dimensions: Variable

Facets (2020) is a Stop Motion Video consisting of 108 Photographic Stills of a mixed-media collage of hyper triangulated self portraits edited, designed and cut by Atiqah.

This work was created to depict the feeling of constant inadequacy even though one is complete, multifaceted, and whole, just the way one is. The work means to highlight the multiplicity of self. The triangulated self-portrait is cut into "puzzle" pieces that play with positive and negative space within each composition.
